See the world through Friday’s eyes

If you lived every day as if it was a Friday, how would it change your view of the world? Your relationships? Your outlook on life?

Ms. Friday doesn’t walk into a room: she shines through the door like a shaft of light, turning particles of dust into beautiful fragments of glitter. Her entrance is announced by an invisible chorus of angels who chime “Ta Da!”. The brightness of her smile and the lightness of her mood lift heads up from screens and hearts out of darkness and despair.

Each morning, Ms. Friday greets the day with a song of gratitude. She has woken up again! She is blessed to be here, enjoying another day on planet Earth. She is thankful. (She even feels like this on Mondays!)

Somewhere around 14:25 on a Thursday, my “Friday feeling” starts. A tiny tickle in the tummy. A bubble of excitement and anticipation which rises close to the surface, threatening to leap out of my mouth in a great big “YAY!” then sinks back down again. The smallest sip of Christmas Eve mixed with a swig of Saturday, a dash of birthday, a slosh of house party, diluted back down to a regular weeknight. Let’s not get carried away — it’s not quite Friday yet.

But then, sure as the Earth spins on its axis, Friday does indeed arrive! And the sun shines brighter. Or at least the misty clouds look a little more romantic and a little less sad.

The coffee smells better.

The barking dog is less irritating.

The house looks nicer.

The apple is sweeter.

The children are kinder to one another.

Upon arriving at work, the usual greetings — exchanged daily and often without eye contact — seem more genuine and heartfelt on a Friday.

Smiles are warmer.

The list seems more manageable.

Requests are less urgent and more considered.

Lunch is tastier.

Fresh air is fresher!

A simple “thank you” is more meaningfully spoken, more readily heard and more deeply appreciated.

And so it goes on. The Friday effect.

To live each day as if it were my last is far too challenging. The impracticality of it! It would be a logistical nightmare. But deciding to live each day like it was Friday… with the brightness of smile and lightness of mood that go with it… that’s something I think I could try.
